Full course description
The Institute for Community Inclusion’s Introduction to Community Life Engagement course can help you build your skills and feel more confident in your role as a direct support professional working in the community. These self-paced online learning lessons will help you learn how to engage in effective person-centered planning, support community life engagement outcomes, map available resources, and build natural supports in the community for people with disabilities.
Learners will have 365 days after registration to complete the course.

Using a Person-Centered Approach to Support Community Life Engagement
Supporting community life engagement involves more than just participating in activities; it is a process that requires a person-centered approach, and an understanding of a person’s dreams, strengths, goals, and interests. Staff will be introduced to tools and strategies to support this process.
Supporting Outcomes in Community Life Engagement
Understanding individualized outcomes and how to achieve them is crucial when assisting individuals in community life engagement. Staff will learn ways to work collaboratively with people and their support teams to set and reach clear goals, while regularly reviewing and adjusting support strategies.
Mapping Resources for Community Life Engagement
In order to support a person’s unique goals and interests, it is important to understand what opportunities and activities exist in each community. Staff will learn about tools and considerations for community exploration, advocacy, and accessibility.
Developing Relationships & Building Natural Supports for Community Life Engagement
Relationships and formal or informal networks are an important part of community life. Staff will learn how to support relationship building and the development of natural supports to reduce reliance on paid supports.
